When Speech Becomes Violence (2023)

Featuring composer Hunter Prueger’s ‘Silent Moment’ (2022).
I first heard the music of Silent Moment at the Fontainbleau Music Festival in France, where the work was premiered. The work was impactful, and shocking, involving prepared piano, electronics, extended string techniques that illustrated the tragedy of the Uvalde shootings.
This music remained in the back of my mind since I first heard it. The theme of the exhibit, “When speech becomes Violence” triggered the memory of this music — involving singing while playing the violin, and electronic with soundbites of the tragedy in Uvalde. This final piece is a visual and aural interpretation of the theme of the exhibit, and a warning to us all, as we continue to experience school shooting tragedies around the country.
